This CANNOT go in your household bins or to landfill. 

Liquid paint, paint hardened in tins and empty paint tins can be dropped off at Hackham Recyclers as part of the national Paintback program. This program accepts paint from households and businesses.

Aerosol paint cans- empty

 Empty aerosol cans - put in the yellow/recycling bin.

Craft paint

Liquid paint CANNOT go in your household bins.

 Add liquid paint to some clumping cat litter. Once it dries, remove all the clumps and dispose of it in the waste bin (preferably wrap it in newspaper or put it in a bag).

Including, but not limited to: herbicides, pesticides, methylated spirits / kerosene, coolant, diesel/petrol, cleaners, thermometers, nail polish and remover, paint strippers/thinners, poisons, acids, fertilisers, gypsum, lubricants etc.

What do they accept?

Hazardous waste products are banned from landfill and require special disposal processing. These include:

• garden chemicals – pesticides,herbicides and fungicides
• insect repellents and rat poison
• cleaners – oven cleaner, toilet cleaner, bleach, ammonia and furniture polish
• automotive products – fuel, oils, lubricants and degreasers
• home improvement products – paints*, thinners and adhesives, batteries, and pool chlorine.

Please note: NO decanting allowed on site. Use original containers where possible.

*Paint can also be dropped off at Hackham Recyclers for free as part of the national Paintback program.

Bring your oil in a clean, plastic container with a lid - the original container is perfect. Avoid using paint cans or other metal containers. 

Empty motor oil containers should be placed in the red/waste to landfill bin.

• Halogen lamp (bulb): used as spotlights or floodlights

Important note: Broken fluoro tubes WILL NOT be accepted. Special caution needs to be taken when disposing and cleaning up broken tubes and globes.

Broken fluorescent lights

Fluorescent lights contain a small amount of mercury inside the glass tube, so if you accidentally break one, it needs to be disposed of correctly by:

• turning off your heating and cooling
• opening doors and windows to naturally ventilate the room
• carefully sweeping it up wearing disposable rubber gloves
• wrapping it in paper and disposing of it in your rubbish bin.

Building - internal

If it's in reasonable condition consider giving it away, swapping or selling it.

• book a hard waste collection

• Must be able to be handled by 2 people.
• If an item is wider or higher than 1.5 metres, we are unable to collect it. This is because the opening at the rear of our collection compactor truck is only 1.5 meters wide, and larger items cannot be accommodated.

Furniture

If it's in reasonable condition consider giving it away, swapping or selling it.

OR

• book a hard waste collection

• Must be able to be handled by 2 people.
• If an item is wider or higher than 1.5 metres, we are unable to collect it. This is because the opening at the rear of our collection compactor truck is only 1.5 meters wide, and larger items cannot be accommodated.

Small pieces

Including balsa, chipboard, plywood

 Put it in the red/waste to landfill bin.

OR

Wooden pallet

Some pallet suppliers offer a pallet return service, which may be run as a credit scheme to encourage higher return rates.

OR

Sawdust / pencil shavings

Put it in the red/waste to landfill bin.

Sawdust from timber or wood product with treatment e.g. permapine/ CCA, paints or oil treatments, composite timber products, etc. contains chemicals or glues which makes it unsuitable for organics composting. 

Woodshavings - untreated (eg. pet bedding)

 Put in the green/organics bin.

Packaged small animal bedding made from natural, untreated wood only.

Regular

Use it for compost or mulch at home.

OR

  Put it in the green organics bin.

Infuser / silky / sachet

 Put it in the red/waste to landfill bin.

These are usually made from polymer plastic (PET) and the tag is paper with a plastic backing (PP and PE). As plastic is not compostable, these bags must go in the waste bin.
