Automatic External Defibrillators
Automated External Defibrillators (AED) provide first aid treatment for life-threatening instances of cardiac arrest and can increase the chance of survival in an emergency situation before an ambulance arrives.
AEDs can be used by the general public and will provide voice instructions to guide the user.
Once active, the AED will deliver a measured electrical shock to restore the normal effective cardiac rhythm in the patient.
Don’t worry - you can’t hurt someone by using an AED.
Providing AEDs is part of the City of Onkaparinga’s commitment to the wellbeing and safety of our residents, visitors and staff.

External Defibrillators installation update 2025
In line with South Australian legislation, multiple Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) were installed across the City of Onkaparinga throughout November and December 2025. These lifesaving devices are located either inside council-owned buildings or positioned outside providing 24-hour public access. Each installation included a clearly marked cabinet, signage, and an easy-to-follow instruction card.
An independent contractor supported this project to ensure all council buildings met the requirements of the Automated External Defibrillator (Public Access) Act 2022, with full compliance achieved by 1 January 2026.
The City of Onkaparinga will maintain these devices through an annual inspection program during 2026. This will include a visual device inspection and defibrillation test to ensure each AED is in good working order and that batteries and consumables are up to date.
