When is a liquor licence required?

The production, sales or consumption of alcohol to the public, generally requires a liquor licence from Consumer and Business Services (CBS), the state government agency responsible for liquor licensing. For example:

you are wanting to host a one-off event
you are changing the use of land (e.g. changing from a house to a restaurant)
you are wanting to change a condition of approval regarding hours of operation
you are increasing the seating capacity
you wish to manufacture liquor from your home

Prior to applying for a liquor licence, a development application may need to be lodged on the state government PlanSA website if you intend to do any of the above.

Ensure the following information is included in your application to Council:

Site plan

A site plan showing the licenced area, also including:

Toilet facilities including portable toilets
Location and number of carparks on-site
If there is music, specify location(s) of speakers
If there will be temporary and/or permanent structures (e.g. stage, marquees, fencing)

Council owned facility

If the City of Onkaparinga owns the property you may require written Landowner Consent

Understand your responsibilities as a Lessee landowner consent

Frequently asked questions

How long do these applications take to process?

Once an application is received, the assessment may take up to 20 business days to be processed. Please note that council may contact the applicant for further information and may extend the assessment timeframe.

How will I know the outcome of my application?

An email of the outcome of your liquor licence application will be sent to the email address provided in the form. Please note that lodging the liquor licence application form is not council consent.
