History and heritage

The City of Onkaparinga region is rich with history and heritage. We aim to preserve cultural places for future generations because we value this history, both Aboriginal and European.

Part of our journey of reconciliation with local Traditional Owners and wider Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is bringing a new mindfulness to how we reflect on the past. We acknowledge that heritage in the Onkaparinga region has many aspects, as we fulfil Council’s deep commitment to both its Aboriginal and European parts.

Council’s proud and active role in local reconciliation action involves embracing the long and rich Aboriginal cultural heritage of the region, while also continuing to celebrate and preserve the importance to our communities of more recent European history. This includes a recognition of the very different time scales involved and acknowledging that our built heritage is constructed and celebrated on traditional Aboriginal land.
