Affordable Housing Strategy
Access to safe, secure, and affordable housing is a growing challenge across the Onkaparinga region. Rising house prices, increasing rental costs, and limited housing supply are making it harder for people to find a home that meets their needs. To address this, we have developed an Affordable Housing Strategy —a long-term plan to support housing options that are diverse, sustainable, and accessible for everyone. This strategy will help guide council's role in advocating for, planning, and influencing housing outcomes in the region.
The strategy aims to balance the needs of all residents by ensuring housing remains accessible while maintaining the character and liveability of our city. It focusses on creating diverse and sustainable housing options that benefit the whole community.
The strategy has 3 focus areas and 7 strategic objectives and 28 actions.
Focus area 1: Well planned and future focussed
- Strategic objective 1.1: Create well designed urban spaces that promote healthy, resilient people and communities
- Strategic objective 1.2: Amplify environmental, social and economic outcomes in new developments and urban renewal areas.
Focus area 2: Liveable, affordable, accessible options
- Strategic objective 2.1: Facilitate housing supply that is affordable to buy or rent
- Strategic objective 2.2: Create the conditions to support housing stock diversity including smaller homes, and homes that are sustainable and affordable to run.
Focus area 3: Connected, collaborative and community-focussed
- Strategic objective 3.1: Raise awareness of housing inequality and advocate for population groups most affected by high housing costs.
- Strategic objective 3.2: Improve options for people in the rental market
- Strategic objective 3.3: Build relationships that encourage innovation, collaboration and local solutions
