Contemporary art for schools
Studios, galleries and artists in residence
Opened to the public in 2015, Sauerbier House is an established arts centre invested in supporting local artistic and cultural exchange through contemporary visual arts. The house contains three main galleries and two purpose-built studio spaces.
Sauerbier House presents 12 exhibitions across the year and supports the development of eight open studio-based artist led projects through the artist in residence program.
Interacting with working artists can offer secondary art teachers and their students the unique opportunity to actively engage with professional creatives and learn about the practice and process of making contemporary art.
We invite you to consider utilising Sauerbier House programming in planning your visual arts curriculum.
Excursions and interactions with artists and exhibitions can be planned to align with ACARA or SACE requirements to support your students to understand the importance of research, analysis, exploration and experimentation in contemporary art making process.
Visits and experiences may include:
- Facilitated or self-guided exhibition and gallery tours.
- Studio visits with artists.
- Artist talks with exhibiting artists/curators.
- Art making opportunities - artist led workshops (some fees may apply).
- Information on the history of Sauerbier House.

About Sauerbier House Culture Exchange
Located on the northern elbow of the Onkaparinga River in Port Noarlunga, the heritage listed colonial villa has been renovated into a practical purpose-built art facility. Local and visiting professional artists working across a range of mediums use the facilities to create site responsive projects and exhibit works previously unseen in our city.
Community engagement is a key element of the programming, with both resident and exhibiting artists engaged for their willingness and availability to connect with the community. Interactions with visitors are fostered and creative relationships developed through the artist in residence and exhibition programming.
