What is rural living?

The State Planning Reform specifies rural living as synonymous to 'country living', in which housing development occurs within rural areas located on the fringes of regional townships and peri-urban areas on the metropolitan fringe.

This type of living often corresponds with rural activities such as horse keeping, hobby farming and/or horticulture. Allotment sizes range from 1200 square metres up to 20 hectares.

What is the Rural Zone in the Planning & Design Code?

According to the Planning & Design Code, the Rural Zone actively envisions supporting the economic prosperity of South Australia primarily through the production, processing, storage and distribution of primary produce, forestry and the generation of energy from renewable sources.

How do I know if a property is within the Rural Zone?

Anyone can check using SAPPA (South Australian Property and Planning Atlas). It is a free, map-based program that displays land administration boundaries, including what zones and overlays apply to a specific address.

What are the development restrictions? Are there any?

As specified above, this depends on the complexity of the proposed development upon the rural premises.
