This liquid CANNOT go in your household bins or to landfill.

Cooking oil cannot be mixed with waste motor oil as they are made from completely different resources.

Small amounts of waste cooking oil can be absorbed into newspaper then placed in the green organics bin.

For larger volumes of cooking oil contact:

• drop-off at a specialised hazardous waste recycling centre e.g. the Adelaide Waste and Recycling Centre in Plympton or the Heathfield Resource Recovery Centre – contact directly for drop-off details.
• take to Durable Recyclers, Hackham - fees apply & minimum 10L volume
• our Waste and Recycling Education team on 8384 0666 for a local reuse option as biofuel.
• a commercial oil recycler (search online)

Rinse out empty cooking oil containers with soapy water, drain and place them in the yellow/recycling bin.

Bring your oil in a clean, plastic container with a lid - the original container is perfect. Avoid using paint cans or other metal containers. 

Empty motor oil containers should be placed in the red/waste to landfill bin.

Including, but not limited to: herbicides, pesticides, methylated spirits / kerosene, coolant, diesel/petrol, cleaners, thermometers, nail polish and remover, paint strippers/thinners, poisons, acids, fertilisers, gypsum, lubricants etc.

These CANNOT go in your household bins or to landfill.

Fuels, paints and household chemicals can be dangerous if they are not stored or disposed of safely and also please be aware that Hazardous Wastes cannot be disposed of in the general waste bin as they are harmful to human health and the environment.

Outdoor gas heaters - Ensure all fuel is drained from heater.

Book a hard waste collection

Including, but not limited to: lawnmowers, whipper snippers, edge trimmers etc.

If it's in working condition consider giving it away, swapping or selling it.

Electric mower / garden tool

  please ensure the mower handle is folded down and compact before placing it in the drop-off cage.

Fuel-powered mower / garden tool

Remove all fuel and oil – these will need to be used or disposed of as hazardous waste.

Ride-on mower

Remove all fuel and oil – these will need to be used or disposed of as hazardous waste.

Large items

Includes metal/steel sheeting, white goods, bikes and scooters (non-motorised) and chains.

Wire / scrap metal

Contact a scrap metal recycler.

OR

 Put it in the red/waste to landfill bin.

Steel/aluminium tins and cans

  Put it in the yellow/recycling bin.

Remove all food & drain – no need to rinse, just scrape clean.

  Empty the jar and put it in the yellow/recycling bin.

Clean

  Put it in the yellow/recycling bin.

NO food scraps – just scrape clean. Don’t worry about oil from the cheese soaking into the cardboard.

Dirty

 If the box contains food residue put it in the green organics bin.

Treated / untreated

Contact a waste to landfill site.

Building - external

If it's in reasonable condition consider giving it away, swapping or selling it.

• contact a salvage yard or waste to landfill site

Building - internal

If it's in reasonable condition consider giving it away, swapping or selling it.

OR

• contact a salvage yard or waste to landfill site
• book a hard waste collection

• Must be able to be handled by 2 people.
• If an item is wider or higher than 1.5 metres, we are unable to collect it. This is because the opening at the rear of our collection compactor truck is only 1.5 meters wide, and larger items cannot be accommodated.

Furniture

If it's in reasonable condition consider giving it away, swapping or selling it.

OR

• book a hard waste collection

• Must be able to be handled by 2 people.
• If an item is wider or higher than 1.5 metres, we are unable to collect it. This is because the opening at the rear of our collection compactor truck is only 1.5 meters wide, and larger items cannot be accommodated.

Small pieces

Including balsa, chipboard, plywood

 Put it in the red/waste to landfill bin.

Wooden pallet

Some pallet suppliers offer a pallet return service, which may be run as a credit scheme to encourage higher return rates.

Sawdust / pencil shavings

Put it in the red/waste to landfill bin.

Sawdust from timber or wood product with treatment e.g. permapine/ CCA, paints or oil treatments, composite timber products, etc. contains chemicals or glues which makes it unsuitable for organics composting. 

Woodshavings - untreated (eg. pet bedding)

 Put in the green/organics bin.

Packaged small animal bedding made from natural, untreated wood only.

Put it in the red/waste to landfill bin.

While tracing paper is often made from treated wood pulp, some types now have a silicone coating, are made from synthetic materials like polyester, or treated with chemicals like sulfuric acid or oils to increase transparency.

Aerosol cans- empty

Including empty aerosol paint cans.
Please make sure container is empty & remove the plastic lid.

 Empty aerosol cans - put in the yellow/recycling bin.

Aerosol cans - NOT empty

What do they accept?

Hazardous waste products are banned from landfill and require special disposal processing. These include:

• garden chemicals – pesticides,herbicides and fungicides
• insect repellents and rat poison
• cleaners – oven cleaner, toilet cleaner, bleach, ammonia and furniture polish
• automotive products – fuel, oils, lubricants and degreasers
• home improvement products – paints*, thinners and adhesives, batteries, and pool chlorine.

Please note: NO decanting allowed on site. Use original containers where possible.

*Paint can also be dropped off at Hackham Recyclers for free as part of the national Paintback program.
