Hard waste collections

Each residential rateable property can have up to 2 free collections per financial year. 

You can put out a maximum of 2 cubic metres of material for collection, equivalent to a 6x4 trailer load.

If these entitlements have been used, please contact a dump for disposal options.

For safety and legal reasons, there are some things we can’t pick up in our hard waste service.

This includes items like:

  • metal
  • e-waste
  • innerspring mattresses
  • building materials
  • chemicals and other hazardous waste.

Step 1.Read the terms and conditions below

Collection entitlements

Each rateable property is entitled to 2 free collections per financial year.

If these entitlements have been used, please contact a Waste Transfer Station for disposal options.

Collection limits

You can place a maximum of 2 cubic metres of material out for collection (i.e. 1m x 1m x 2m). See FAQs for details of acceptable/non-acceptable items.

  • Items must be placed as close as practicable to the kerb without blocking pedestrian access (items will not be collected from private property).
  • Please remove doors from any furniture for the safety of children.
  • 1.5 metre limit: if an item is wider or higher than 1.5 metres, we are unable to collect it. This is because the opening at the rear of our collection compactor truck is only 1.5 meters wide, and larger items cannot be accommodated.
  • Ensure items can be easily lifted by two people.

Placement for collection

Items can only be put out on the kerb the day before your scheduled pick up.

If booked items are not out by the scheduled date for collection, this entitlement will be deemed used and cannot be reinstated. Please book a new collection date.

Items placed out that are not eligible for collection as per above OR do not meet the criteria identified below, will not be collected and will be your responsibility to dispose of responsibly.

Bookings

Bookings are essential.  Items placed on public land without a booking, or more than 24 hours prior to a scheduled collection, are considered illegally dumped and can attract fines of up to $5000. 

All items placed out on the kerbside are your responsibility until they are removed by the City of Onkaparinga.

Booking dates cannot be viewed until the booking process has been started and your address aligned with our collection sequence. Then, a selection of booking dates will be provided.

Cancellations

Bookings can be cancelled up to 5pm the day prior to your scheduled collection. Cancellations on the date of the scheduled collection will be deemed used and cannot be reinstated. Please book a new collection date.

Step 2.Check your items are suitable for collection

This service helps you dispose of bulky household items that are too large for your kerbside bins. Some items, however, can't be collected and need other disposal methods.

Step 4.Place your items by the kerb

FAQ's

Who is eligible for the free hard waste collection service?

The hard waste service is available to all residents of the City of Onkaparinga, including those renting a property. This service covers all rateable residential properties.

Is there a limit to the number of collections per year?

There is a limit of 2 collections per rateable property per financial year.

These can be booked on two separate days or as one ‘double’ booking with the two collections booked on the same date.

How far in advance do I need to book the service?

You can book the service up to 12 months in advance. Collections are scheduled on a 4 week rotation due to the size of the council area.

Most collections can be booked within the next 4 weeks.

Please note that bookings close 48 hours before the scheduled collection day.

Can I cancel my booking and rebook another date?

To cancel your booking:

  1. In the relevant booking tab, click the ‘Book online’ button to log into the portal.
  2. In the ‘Open service requests’ section, find the booking you wish to amend and click the ‘Open’ button.
  3. Click Cancel.
  4. Confirm cancellation by clicking OK.

To book another date:

  • Follow the above steps for cancelling your booking, then click the 'Book hard waste' button to start the process again.

What specific types of items are accepted for hard waste collection?

Are there any items not accepted in hard waste collections?

Certain items will not be collected due to legislative bans, WH&S considerations or where other recycling options are available. These include:

  • Prohibited items
     Electronic items (e-waste), whitegoods, asbestos, hazardous materials (chemicals, paint, oil), building materials and medical waste. These are banned from landfills and have other disposal options.
  • Metal items
    Banned from landfills - contact a scrap metal dealer or collection service.
  • Innerspring mattresses
    Book a separate mattress collection.
  • Large, heavy items that will not fit in the compactor of the collection truck (i.e. are wider than approx. 1.5m), or cannot be handled by two people.

Where should I place the items for collection?

Place items on the verge in front of your property without blocking pedestrian access or other people’s driveways.

Is there a specific time when I should place my items outside?

Yes, put your items out no earlier than the day before your booked collection date. If the items are not collected, bring them back onto your property within 24 hours.

Do items need to be sorted or separated in any way?

Yes, please arrange the items neatly and safely so our collectors can pick them up easily.

What should I do with items that are too large to move by myself?

For large items you cannot move, you might need to arrange for help or consider other disposal options.

What time will the collection service arrive?

We can't give a specific time. Our team does up to 80 collections a day, and the timing can vary a lot depending on how much there is to pick up and if some loads aren't ready. Make sure to put your items at the kerb the day before your collection date to ensure they aren’t missed.

Do I need to be present during the collection?

No, you don't need to be present. Any unacceptable items will be left on the verge.

How will I be notified if my items are not collected, and why?

If your items are not collected because they are not acceptable, we will leave a feedback slip in your letterbox with the details.

We do not leave information if the items are not out ready for collection.

What happens when my hard waste is collected?

When your hard waste is collected, all materials will be crushed and transported to a landfill.

Unfortunately, this service does not include a recycling option. Therefore, we strongly encourage residents to explore alternative options for their items before scheduling a hard waste collection.

Consider reusing, donating, selling or recycling items that are still in good condition. By doing so, you can help reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills and contribute to a more sustainable community.

Can I go on a cancellation list?

No. There is no such thing as a cancellation list – once a collection is fully booked, the resident can only be offered to book into the next available date.

    Sofa beds contain several material types, some of which are banned from landfill, so cannot be included in a hard waste collection. Sofa beds need to be dismantled and metal separated for appropriate disposal.
  • remove the mattress/cushions and unscrew the hinge arms that fasten the bed part to the sofa's frame.
  • contact a scrap metal recycler (metal frame)
  • book a hard waste collection (timber frame)
    sofa bed mattresses are included if they do not contain inner-springs.

Waterbed

If it's in reasonable condition consider giving it away or selling it.

Bladder to be cut open and emptied. Dismantle frame if over 1.5m.

Car seat - child/baby

Used child seats are not suitable for donation because the integrity of a product cannot be guaranteed without knowing the history and age of a seat. It is difficult to determine whether the product has been damaged in an accident.

Child seats, capsules and booster seats can be recycled via the RAA Child Safety Centre at Mile End.  

It costs $5 to recycle a seat and, if you’re a RAA member, you’ll receive a $5 gift voucher to use on your next child restraint purchase.
