A significant civic building of the original township of Morphett Vale, the Institute was built in 1878 on land donated by Mrs Anderson. The original building is constructed of bluestone from Myles' Quarry with galvanised roofing. Extensive additions were constructed to the front of the orginal building in 1928 with use of limestone walls and rendered brick quoins.
