National Reconciliation Week
At its heart, reconciliation is about building respectful relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians for the benefit of everyone.
National Reconciliation Week (27 May - 3 June) is an annual opportunity for all Australians- including those of us living and working on Kaurna Country - to learn about our shared histories, celebrate the cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and recommit to the ongoing journey of reconciliation.
The dates of National Reconciliation Week (NRW) mark a few significant milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey:
- 27 May – Marks the 1967 referendum when over 90% of Australians voted to remove discriminatory clauses from the Constitution and allow the Commonwealth to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- 29 May – Recognises the official presentation of the Torres Strait Islander flag in 1992, symbolising identity, unity and connection to land and sea.
- 3 June – Named "Mabo Day" commemorates Mer Island man Eddie Koiki Mabo and his successful effort to overturn the legal fiction of terra nullius – literally ’empty land’.
The theme for 2026 - All In - is a call to every Australian to step off the sidelines and commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day. Reconciliation is not a spectator sport. It asks something of all of us.
For the City of Onkaparinga, this week holds special significance. We are planning to launch our Reconciliation Action Plan (Innovate) 2026–2028 during NRW - our commitment to making reconciliation part of how we work, every day, across our whole organisation. Built on Kaurna Country and serving a community of more than 170,000 people, we believe reconciliation is inseparable from our responsibility to improve the wellbeing of everyone who calls this region home.
What can I do?
Below you'll find resources, events and ways to get involved - whether you're taking your first steps or continuing a journey already underway.
