Media response - McLaren Vale intersection upgrade rural signage

Published on 18 January 2024

Response to The Advertiser.

  • Wondering if I could please get a statement from you regarding the five new proposed intersection upgrades in the McLaren Vale region.

Comments attributed to Mayor Moira Were

These five proposed upgrades are the latest in a major project we’ve undertaken with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) to improve road safety in McLaren Vale, which was sparked by two tragic fatal crashes.

In response, council undertook a safety audit in 2021, before working with the state government to install enhanced warning signage at 14 intersections, and seeking the community’s feedback on more significant upgrades that will tackle seven intersections with a higher level of crash trauma, including two major upgrades.

The proposed upgrades for five of the intersections use Rural Junction Active Warning System (RJAWS) technology, which is intended to improve driver awareness by providing advance notice of upcoming intersections, ultimately enhancing safety on rural roads.

We’re really keen to hear the community’s views on these proposed upgrades, and you can have your say at onkaparingacity.com/yoursay until Monday 5 February.

We’re grateful for the state government’s $4.2 million in funding—an election commitment from Member for Mawson, Leon Bignell—towards the 21 intersections project, and we look forward to continuing to work collaboratively with DIT to complete the remaining seven intersection upgrades by June 2025.

We were also pleased to recently secure an additional $737,500 from the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program for the intersection upgrade of Main, Johnston and McMurtrie Roads.
