Response to the Fleurieu Sun.
- The journalist asked for comments regarding Onkaparinga's 10km/h beach speed limit, amid potential changes to beach speed limits elsewhere in South Australia.
Comments attributed to Mayor Moira Were
We’ve had a 10km/h speed limit at Aldinga, Moana, Silver Sands and Sellicks for many years to help ensure the safety of all beach users and wildlife.
Our beaches are very popular, particularly in summer and around key dates such as Australia Day, so this speed limit is critical to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable visit that also protects the coast and its wildlife for future generations.
Onkaparinga residents have strong pride for their local beaches, and the community support for the speed limit is evident on the infrequent occasion antisocial behaviour such as hoon driving occurs, which is always decried and reported on the beach, and on social media afterwards.
If you’re headed to our beaches, please take your rubbish home with you, take note of the signs to help guide you on where to drive and park, and keep to the 10 km/hour speed limit.
Vehicle offences such as speeding, dangerous or hoon driving should be reported to SA Police at the time it’s occurring on 131 444, or 000 if there’s an immediate danger to people.
