  • The journalist spoke to local residents that are unhappy that their unofficial playground and some BMX jumps were taken down at Helmsman Terrace Park in Seaford. He wanted to know why this was the case.
City of Onkaparinga staff removed makeshift play equipment, structures and some BMX jumps at Helmsman Terrace Park, Seaford, earlier this week because they posed safety risks to the community and had caused damage to a tree.
Council rangers identified the unauthorised and dangerous alterations - which included a tree swing, cubby house attached to a tree and BMX jumps - in late 2021 and reported and requested the hazards be removed in accordance with their powers under the Local Government Act 1999.
Council's Parks and Natural Resources team confirmed the safety risks to children during their inspection earlier this week, which included exposed sharp nails and screws, and faulty swing ropes and ladder. The team also confirmed the tree had suffered damage due to the use of nails and screws into its limbs, as well as from engraving and ring barking.
While we empathise with the removal of the play equipment and the concerns raised by local residents, council staff acted diligently as community safety officers to help protect the users of the park. Council completed an upgrade of the Helmsman Terrace Park reserve in mid-2021, following engagement with the community, which included an upgraded playground, nature play items, upgraded irrigation, pathways, landscaping and seating.
