Media response – Sellicks Beach

Enquiry – Yahoo News

The reporter was following up regarding photos taken from Sellicks Beach in which it appeared people were not adhering to the current safety guidelines for that area, with drivers and campers set up on the sand.

Clarity was sought on:

  • whether council was seeking feedback from the community on a proposed plan to install bollards to restrict vehicle access
  • whether the issue remains a concern
  • what has been done to address the issue a
  • are there fines in place for offenders

Response

Local residents have raised concerns about ongoing vehicle access in the no-vehicle zone south of the Sellicks Beach access ramp. For this reason, we’re seeking community feedback on a proposal to install permanent bollards along the existing no-vehicle zone.

Community engagement is open until 1 February 2026 via our Your Say page. Feedback received will help inform elected members’ decision-making process about whether bollards are the right solution and, if so, how they should be implemented. A report is scheduled for consideration at the March Council meeting, where councillors will aim to balance community safety, accessibility and environmental protection.

Signs are currently in place indicating where vehicles are prohibited under Council By-Law 6. Disappointingly, vehicles are still regularly entering and driving in the prohibited zones, which prompted the bollard installation proposal.

Our community safety officers (or ‘rangers’) also monitor our beaches every day during peak times to provide community education and enforcement controls on a range of matters, including vehicle compliance, though there were no vehicles in the prohibited zone when rangers arrived in the photographed instance. The expiation fee amount is $312.50.

If you’re headed for a day at the beach, please don’t drive in the no-vehicle zones to help improve safety for other beachgoers and protect the coastal environment.
