Vegetation
Minkarra Park is a high priority conservation area with more than 101 different local indigenous plant species, 8 of which are of regional conservation significance. The walking trail network takes you through a variety of native vegetation communities including River Red Gum woodlands along two watercourses, Blue Gum woodlands, Kangaroo Thorn shrublands and a patch of nationally endangered Grey Box woodland. There are also sections with old pine plantations and non-local native tree plantations that still contain some native understorey plants.
Interpretive signs along the trails provide information about the native vegetation and wildlife habitats.
Wildlife Habitat
This park provides important habitat for wildlife including birds, frogs, skinks, possums, kangaroos and koalas. Surveys have recorded more than 50 bird species, including 10 species that are considered threatened in this region.
Native woodlands like this are particularly important habitat for smaller woodland birds which are disappearing from urban areas.
If you want to test your bird watching skills, you can download species checklist for all the birds that have been recorded in Minkarra Park.
