If putting food in your organics bin you can put it in loose, wrapped in newspaper or in a compostable bag showing the AS 4736 / Australian compostable seedling logo (these are used to line the kitchen food caddy). These bags are made from natural plant starch so break down at the same rate as food and garden waste.
Please be wary of bags labelled ‘biodegradable’ or ‘Plant based’ as these are usually only partially plant based with the remainder still plastic, so should only be used for the waste bin.
Compostable bags made from 100% natural starch are available to purchase from our Customer Service offices from 1 December 2020.
- Bag size: 8 litres
- Roll size: 55 bags
- Cost: $5.50 per roll
For information on what can be recycled in the green organics bin visit our Recycling and Disposal Guide.
Store your bags in a cool, dark, dry place until you need them and they should have a shelf life of 12-18 months.
