Technologies of the past are becoming obsolete and it’s harder than ever to access content on these outdated formats. The Media Conversion Station aims to give you access back, through this free service.
The following formats can be digitised or converted using the station:
- VHS tapes
- Camcorder tapes (VHS-C Cassette only)
- Photographs
- Documents
- Film (positive, colour negative, B&W negative) - Medium format film, 4 x 5 inch film, 35mm film strips, oversized film of up to 8 x 10 inches.
- Slides - 35mm slides
This training session with a library staff member will teach you how to use the station. The station provides a VCR player, VHS-C Cassette converter and scanner set up for your use.
Please bring:
- the media you wish to practice converting with you. For VHS and VHS-C, conversion time depends on the length of tape and so it cannot be guaranteed that a conversion will be possible during the training session. The training staff member can advise you of this at the start of your session.
- Also bring a method for saving (e.g USB or login details for iCloud or Google drive). If using a USB, we recommend bringing an empty USB with adequate storage space (particularly if converting VHS video content). New 16GB USB's are available as a $10 purchase at Noarlunga Library if required. For your reference, 60 minutes of converted tape requires 1.1GB of storage.
- If converting video footage, wired headphones are required to check audio.
The station can be booked outside these training sessions for those confident enough to use the station self-guided.
Please Note:
- The VHS and Camcorder conversion occurs in real time. For instance, 30 minutes of footage will take 30 minutes to convert. Bare this in mind when booking a session, as you are required to stay at the station whilst this conversion takes place.
- The Media Conversion Station wipes all content in between bookings. Ensure you have planned where you will save your converted or digitised content.
- We ask that media being converted is clean and in relatively good condition. To help maintain the station for all to use, we will not allow any damaged, mouldy or unclean material.
Conditions:
- It is your responsibility to obtain the appropriate copyright permissions to reproduce and digitise your items. For more information and fact sheets, please visit the Australian Copyright Council website.
- Using the media conversion station is at your own risk. City of Onkaparinga Libraries is not liable for any damage, loss, or erasure of data from any media that you bring to digitise. If your materials are particularly fragile or precious, we recommend that you consider a professional service. This might also be appropriate if you have a large volume of items to convert.
- Any use of the station and its equipment must comply with the City of Onkaparinga Libraries Customer Service Charter.
- Please arrive on time to join the training session fully.
Suitable for adults. Bookings essential.
