Media response - traffic congestion

Response to the Fleurieu Sun.

  • Interested in grabbing some quotes from the mayor regarding easing congestion for travellers heading south. Is there anything council is looking to do to ease congestion, particularly at the Southern Expressway exit and start of Victor Harbor Road?

Comments attributed to Mayor Moira Were

Council has been advocating to the state government to address the section of Main South Road between the expressway and Victor Harbor Road, which often experiences crashes and subsequent periods of significant network-wide congestion, for a number of years.

We raised this in our May 2021 submission to the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) in response to the first major community engagement exercise for the Fleurieu Connections project, and we’ve continued raising these concerns during subsequent meetings between council and the state government.

Our current advocacy plan includes ‘Gateway to the South’ as a project priority, seeking a solution that ensures seamless traffic flows from Victor Harbor Road and Main South Road to start of the Southern Expressway.

DIT recently informed us that they’re working on a ‘Main South Road (Southern Expressway to Robinson Road) Planning Study’, with community engagement expected to commence soon.

We also continue to advocate to the state government to address other issues involving the state road network, such as the Dyson Road to Commercial Road corridor, including at the Saltfleet Street bridge, where congestion is often experienced through Port Noarlunga—especially when there’s an incident on the Southern Expressway or Main South Road through Old Noarlunga.
