We know cost-of-living pressures are making it hard for many in our community to make ends meet, which is why we’re investigating the potential establishment of a community food hub in the Seaford region.

The hub could provide low-cost groceries and essentials in a store-like setting, opportunities to connect with others in the community, and skill-building activities and support programs tailored to local needs. It would also be open to the whole community, with no eligibility or assessment required before accessing.

We’ve previously trialled pop-up social supermarkets in collaboration with local service providers and community groups, and the success of these pilots helped inspire the push for a more permanent space.

The Seaford region was chosen after our recent food relief mapping work and our Putting Food on the Table food security survey both identified it as an area of high need, and one that’s underserviced by current food relief services.

We’re keen to hear from the community how they’d like a potential community food hub to look and feel, and what’s important to include. While the wider community can provide feedback, we’re targeting community in the Central South and Southern districts (Seaford, Aldinga and surrounds) to have their say by visiting onkaparingacity.com/yoursay by Sunday 17 August, or at community drop-in sessions at the Seaford Community Centre on Saturday 9 August (2–4pm) and Seaford’s Hastings Street Hall on Thursday 21 August (5:30pm to 7:30pm).

Our scoping for this potential community food hub is funded by the Department of Human Services, and we’re hopeful of securing additional DHS funding to make the hub a reality subject to the outcomes of community engagement and a report to Council early next year.
