Media response - trail bikes

Published on 02 March 2020

Response to Channel 9.

Residents at and around Albert Tce and Christies Creek Park, Morphett Vale, are complaining about dirt/trail bike riders riding through the park at all hours of the night, and occasionally in a dangerous manner. I was wondering if I could please grab a response to the following:

Has council been notified by residents of their concerns?

The surrounding area along Christies Creek at Morphett Vale has been identified as a hotspot  for illegal trail bike riders and SAPOL is aware.

What steps has council taken to try and rectify the situation?

Because of the reserve’s size, multiple access points and the need to ensure access for walkers and cyclists, installing an effective barrier would be very difficult.

There are many requirements needed to establish a site suitable for dirt bike activities. The site would need to have the appropriate zoning, be available for development, and meet EPA requirements regarding proximity to residential areas and issues related to noise.

Over the last 10 years we’ve undertaken an extensive investigation to identify potential sites, including discussions with adjoining councils, but we found no suitable sites that meet all necessary requirements.

At present, the closest dedicated facility for dirt bikes or motocross is the ACUSA Park in Harrogate in the Adelaide Hills, managed by Motorcycling SA.

What further steps, if any, are council able to take in this instance?

When trail bikes are ridden in Council reserves and parkland racks, a range of offences are being committed, some which are regulated by SAPOL. You will need to contact SAPOL for details on this.

Where should residents refer their complaints about this to?

Should residents observe any unlawful motorbike riding on a reserve, it’s recommended they contact the Police Communications Centre on 131 444. Residents can also contact us and we’ll liaise with SAPOL.
