The Hopgood Theatre’s $6 million transformation will deliver a world-class experience for audiences and performers alike, including the talented local dance schools that come here to perform.
Performers are set to benefit from new, state-of-the-art sound, lighting and acoustics, which will vastly improve the quality of performances; and more comfortable and inviting dressing rooms, green room and rehearsal spaces to help ensure dancers are at the top of their game.
A former TAFE lecture theatre has also been transformed into a smaller, intimate performance space that can broaden programming possibilities for local dance schools.
Audiences who come to see these dancers perform will be greeted with a vastly improved front-of-house area (including a new bar and café facilities); a modern, vibrant and inviting atmosphere; fully upgraded toilets; and upgraded seating, including 10 new wheelchair and companion seating spaces that significantly improve accessibility and inclusion.
More broadly, the transformation of Southern Adelaide’s largest performing arts facility means the 481-seat theatre will continue fostering education, participation and connection across our region for many years to come.
I’m thrilled to see the return of local dance school concerts to what is already a packed calendar of upcoming shows, delivered through our partnership with Country Arts SA.
Upcoming shows include one of Australia’s most talented comedians Anh Do on 25 November, and the internationally acclaimed Soweto Gospel Choir on 17 February. New shows are being added regularly – head to hopgoodtheatre.com.au for more information.
The Hopgood’s upgrade was funded by the Government of South Australia, led by the City of Onkaparinga and designed by Grieve Gillett Architects. Its continued existence is thanks to tireless advocacy from the community, elected representatives and the council, who united to save the venue when its future was at risk.
