Response to The Advertiser

We are wanting to do a story on the refurbishment of Beach Rd at Christies Beach and would love some comment from the council. Please see the queries below.

  • What will the upgrade look like? How extensive is the upgrade?
  • How will the upgrade benefit the area?
  • How much will the upgrade cost?
  • When will the upgrade start? Will there be roadworks and delays?
  • Has the council got funding from the state government for the new toilet facility? I can see they are estimated to cost $240,000 which exceeds the state government's initial commitment of $160,000.
  • Is there any chance of getting some pics of what the upgrade will look like?

Comments attributed to Acting Mayor Michael Fisher

The Beach Road Streetscape Improvements project will involve the upgrade of several focus areas or “nodal points” along the western end of Beach Road, Christies Beach.

This will include new street furniture, landscaping, pavement and public art to create a more inviting street for people to stop and linger. Two of the upgraded nodal points will encourage greater outdoor dining opportunities to surrounding businesses by extending the footpath.

How will the upgrade benefit the area?

The upgrade will benefit businesses, visitors and locals, with the purpose of creating a more attractive street for people to stop and linger.

How much will the upgrade cost?

The total estimated cost of the Beach Road streetscape improvements and new public toilet facility on Beach Road is $910,000. The streetscape elements are $670,000 and new public toilet is $240,000.

The state government has agreed to provide $760,000 for the Beach Road streetscape improvements and a new public toilet facility on Beach Road.

The City of Onkaparinga is also contributing $150,000 toward the streetscape improvements.

When will the upgrade start? Will there be roadworks and delays?

Construction is planned to start by March 2024. The majority of the streetscape work is along the footpath, with minimal impact on the road. Some work will be required in car parking areas, but we’ll work with our contractor to minimise any impacts.

Has the council got funding from the state government for the new toilet facility? I can see they are estimated to cost $240,000 which exceeds the state government's initial commitment of $160,000.

Council will receive $760,000 of state government funding for the streetscape works and new toilet facility. $240,000 of this funding is for the new public toilet facility.

Is there any chance of getting some pics of what the upgrade will look like?
