Media release - another thrilling Santos TDU finale in 2020
Published on 18 July 2019
The City of Onkaparinga will play host to the dramatic final stage of the 2020 Santos Tour Down Under for the second year running following an announcement by the Hon. Corey Wingard, Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing, and Race Director, Mike Turtur, today.
Australia’s premier cycling event will see top athletes from around the world vying for stage and overall race honours in the City of Onkaparinga on Sunday 26 January 2020.
Starting in McLaren Vale, the 151.5km sixth and final stage will weave its way through stunning vistas of Snapper Point, Aldinga Beach and Willunga, before a thrilling finish atop Willunga Hill.
City of Onkaparinga Mayor Erin Thompson said the announcement of back-to-back final stages was a huge coup for what is one of Australia’s finest cycling regions.
“We were so proud to host the finish in the City of Onkaparinga for the first time in 2019, and the fact we’ll host it again in 2020 is testament to the way our communities have embraced this iconic race,” Mayor Thompson said.
“In January 2019 our stage attracted more than 133,000 visitors, generating millions in economic benefit to the City of Onkaparinga and broadcasting images of our beautiful landscapes and charming townships around the world.
“I can’t wait to see our streets decorated and lined with spectators, and our world-class food, wine and accommodation offerings packed to the rafters in 2020.”
Mike Turtur, Race Director, Santos Tour Down Under, said the hilltop finish for the last stage of the TDU was a popular route.
“The hilltop finish at Willunga Hill holds a very special place in the race and we knew we had to create something special for the 2019 event. It most certainly brought a new element to the race and was so well received so it made sense to replicate this route for Stage 6 in next year’s event,” said Turtur.
“I am hoping that this time around we can draw even more of a crowd to cheer the riders home for the conclusion of the Santos Tour Down Under.”
Onkaparinga will also host the 2019 Cycling Australia Masters Road National Championships in October, further reinforcing its reputation as a premier cycling destination.
