Nurlu Karrangka / Eleanora Park

Basketball keyway and playground

The reserve was formally named ‘Nurlu Karrangka/Eleanora Park’ on 5 March 2019 following community consultation.

The Aboriginal name ‘Nurlu Karrangka’ means ‘above Nurlu’ (above the bend/corner) in the Kaurna language, as the park rises up away from the bend in the Onkaparinga River commonly known as ‘Perry’s Bend’. The name Nurlu Karrangka was provided by Kaurna Warra Karrpanthi Aboriginal Corporation.

The other part of the name ‘Eleanora’ was suggested by a community member and recognises the more recent history of the site. Early settler Eleanor Gordon Clark (1824–1906), married Alfred Perry Snr in 1848. They had 10 children. Their former homestead and outbuildings were located in the north-east section of the park near Liguria Crescent. The buildings changed hands and in 1958 became known as ‘The Ranch’ and later the ‘Eleanora Centre’.
