Media response - Ray Gilbert

Published on 22 June 2020

  • Just heard the sad news about the passing of ex-mayor Ray Gilbert. I'm going to write a short story about him and his contribution to the area. Could you please send through some quotes from the Mayor about Ray's time with Onkaparinga Council and his contribution to the community.

Comments attributed to Mayor Erin Thompson

Ray Gilbert had an indomitable passion for his community and worked tirelessly for our city for 34 years.

He served originally as an elected member and later as Mayor of the former Noarlunga Council, and was the City of Onkaparinga’s inaugural Mayor from 1997 to 2006.

He also generously gave his time and experience to volunteer with many community organisations.

In 2002 he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for service to local government and health services.

He and his wife Edith received the Key and Freedom of Entry to the City of Onkaparinga in 2006 in honour and recognition of their achievements and outstanding service to local government and the community.

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank Ray for his passion and energy and the difference he made to our city and to so many people’s lives.

Our sincere condolences to his family and all who knew him.
