Mayor Erin Thompson elected to leading local government advocacy group

City of Onkaparinga Mayor Erin Thompson has been elected as one of two new southern members of the Greater Adelaide Region Organisation of Councils (GAROC) Committee.

The role of GAROC, formally established through the Local Government Association (LGA) in 2018, is to lead regional advocacy, policy initiation and review, leadership engagement and capacity building in the greater Adelaide region.

Mayor Thompson was elected alongside City of Mitcham Mayor Dr Heather Holmes-Ross following the LGA’s call for nominations to fill two vacant positions allocated to the South Regional Grouping of GAROC (comprising Onkaparinga, Marion and Mitcham Councils).

Mayor Thompson said the election was a great opportunity.

“Being a GAROC member means power in numbers, where we can discuss and advocate for issues important to the sector, and share knowledge with and learn from my counterparts across Adelaide,” Mayor Thompson said.

“I’m looking forward to beginning my term, becoming more involved in the policies and strategies that matter, and providing input from the City of Onkaparinga’s perspective.”

The mayors will take office at the LGA’s 2020 Annual General Meeting on 29 October, with their terms to end at the 2022 LGA Annual General Meeting. GAROC members do not receive a sitting fee, nor is there any cost to council.
