SAUERBIER HOUSE FRINGE EXHIBITION

Saturday 7 February until Saturday 21 March

Hallway Gallery

Falling open (not apart) explores the formation of identity as a response to place. The exhibition speaks of the physicality of memory and the ethereal dimensions of place, existing outside of time. For example, the idea of “home” arises exclusively in conjunction with remembered sensations, while a deeper sense of “home” emerges when simply being where the body is happens without resistance. The presented drawings bear witness to the invention of a fictional method that enables remote communication via the “ether”, entangling two places. By engaging intensively with the Swan River/Derbarl Yerrigan, the body works its way through the place’s subtle layers, at the same time listening to the Onkaparinga River/Ngangkipari, where the body is no longer. The exhibition speaks of the physicality of memory and the ethereal dimensions of place, existing out-side of time.

About Margit

Margit Silvia Brünner, who holds a PhD in Visual Arts, conducts her artistic research between Vienna and Kaurna Country/Adelaide. Her work, which includes performative interventions, video, and drawing, explores the spatiality of affective relations. Brünner studied architecture under Hans Hollein at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna, and has received several prestigious grants, including from the Austrian Federal Chancellery and the MF & MH Joyner Fine Arts scholarship.

Her practice has been significantly shaped by awards and residencies, expanding her international profile. Notable honors include the Promotional Grant from the University of Applied Arts and the Margarethe Schütte-Lihotzky Projektstipendium. Residencies at Senselab at Montreal Concordia University, the Australian Experimental Art Foundation, and Sauerbier House Cultural Exchange have provided fresh perspectives.

Brünner's work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions at venues such as FELT Space in Adelaide, Kunsthalle Exnergasse in Vienna, and the Centre for Contemporary Photography in Melbourne. Her exploration of physical space and emotional experience is encapsulated in her book, Constructing Atmospheres: Test-sites of an Aesthetics of Joy, endorsed by philosopher Gernot Böhme. Her contributions to academic discourse include conference presentations and her role as a board member of ‘Atmospheric Spaces.’ She has also taught at the University of Adelaide, RMIT, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.
