The Blue Groper, now commonly known as The Goggles, depict various shapes and elements layered within a goggle frame to increase awareness of the unique underwater aquatic life found at the Port Noarlunga reef and surrounds.
This work was commissioned and driven by The Friends of Gulf St Vincent who were instrumental in activating a coordinated approach by coastal communities to protect and conserve the Gulf waters. Their aim was to use public art to inspire, educate and engage the community for the marine conservation of the Port Noarlunga Reef which is the home of over 200 temperate marine species. The Western Blue Groper is an iconic carnivorous species which can reach 1.7 metres in length, weighing up to 40 kilograms and if allowed, can reach an age of 70 years.
At the time of this commission Western Blue Gropers had been observed around Port Noarlunga Reef after an absence of almost 50 years. This work is a celebration of the diversity of species and aims to assist in the education of the public regarding the health and future of this unique marine park.
