  • Just chasing this caravan park situation. Speaking to a couple of residents affected who are affected by these restriction changes. Are council able to provide how many unoccupied sites there are at both the Christies Beach and Moana parks? The country is facing a rental crisis, given these are both council resources why aren't they being opened up to those doing it tough? Will council look to change to current restrictions to let those who are struggling to find a home, stay at the sites longer?

Are council able to provide how many unoccupied sites there are at both the Christies Beach and Moana parks?

Of the 76 powered sites at Moana Beach Tourist Park, 30 per cent are allocated for longer stays (up to 30 days) and 70 per cent for shorter stays (generally up to 14 days). Currently the long-stay sites are fully occupied, and approximately 25 per cent of the short-stay sites are occupied. Unpowered sites (grassed camping areas) are excluded.

September school holidays will see an increase in short holiday stays as the warmer months approach.

The country is facing a rental crisis, given these are both council resources why aren't they being opened up to those doing it tough?

Both tourist parks are on council-owned land and are classified as Leisure Facilities under the approved Community Land Management Plan. It’s a requirement of the Local Government Act 1999 that councils manage community land in line with their intended purpose.

The parks’ primary purpose is to provide accommodation for tourists. They’re not intended to be the principal place of residence for the public.

Will council look to change to current restrictions to let those who are struggling to find a home, stay at the sites longer?

Both parks are managed day-to-day in line with their defined role as tourist parks.

Consistency of conditions of occupancy (length of stays) is required to order ensure fairness, equity and surety for all visitors.

It’s in this context that a maximum of 30 days for any one stay has been established, with a maximum of 120 days for any given calendar year.

As per the parks’ Community Land Management Plan, any significant change to existing uses requires public consultation and amendment of the Management Plan.

The state government is responsible for housing while council has a role in supporting families experiencing disadvantage through our community centres and other support services.

The council will always work with the state government to support our local community.
