The Chill n Chat Project is a youth led initiative supporting young people with the tools and skills to connect, build resilience and have open conversations around mental health, practising safe, community-based peer to peer intervention.
Held at Aberfoyle Community Centre on Wednesdays during school term time from 3.30pm to 5.30pm, young people aged Year 7 to Year 12 in high school will be able to use the centre space to connect with others, take some time out or try out a new activity.
Activities will be tailored to young people's expressed needs, incorporating peer support, restorative practice and tangible takeaways on self-care strategies.
Eight successful applicants will also be recruited as volunteer Youth Mentor Support Leaders – receiving free Teen Mental Health First Aid training, mentoring and support and other skill development opportunities to enhance their mental health literacy as well as clearly define their role within the project.
The Youth Mentor Support Leaders will provide guidance and support to their peers and advocate for a culture of care amongst the group.
This project is supported by the City of Onkaparinga’s Community Development Officer (Youth) and is possible thanks to grant funding from the Department for Human Services.
The ultimate goal of the Chill n Chat project is to empower young people with tools, skills and positive messaging - promoting open conversations and breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health and mental illness.
