Media response - success of bin latches

  • I am wondering if I could please request an update on this oneAre people still actively using them? Are you making sales in 2024 years after the trial period ended? Did you find they have helped in keeping rubbish in bins and off streets? Have animals been deterred? Anything you can provide on the topic would be greatly appreciated.

Sales of bin latches have been steady ever since our initial trial in December 2021, with peaks in sales following high wind events. We originally purchased 1000 latches and are about to order more because our stock on hand is down to less than 100.

It’s hard to measure their direct impact because their use is spread over such a large council area. However the steady sales and the positive feedback we’ve received via social media suggest the latches are successfully keeping lids closed and preventing litter from reaching the streets.

Crows are the primary bird/animal issue in our area for bin litter and latches certainly deter the birds from pecking at exposed bags and allowing litter out of the bin. The latches are also a much safer option to keep your bin lid closed than using bricks or bottles, which we discourage because of the risks posed to passers-by, collection trucks and passing vehicles.
