The reserve takes its name from the Symonds family, who owned the land where the reserve is located from 1946 to 1958. The earliest known European owner was Thomas Storey Aldam, from 1909 to 1946, then Cyril Spurgeon Symonds 1946 to 1956, then Gordon Robert Symonds 1956 to 1958 when it was sold to the Wakefield Land Company. The family's barn on Butterworth Road was known as Symond’s Barn, and later The Lion's Den when it was occupied by the Lions Club of Willunga & Districts. The building is now heritage listed.
