Funding the vibe
Recipient: Jim Marshall
Grant: $3,000
Purpose: Studio time and production support for debut EP release
Local artists bring soul to our streets, stories to our stages, and connection to our communities. Supporting their growth means investing in the cultural heartbeat of our region.
The City of Onkaparinga’s Local Artists grant helped Maslin Beach musician Jim Marshall take a major step forward in his music career — from busking in Willunga to national radio play.
Jim, known for his rich baritone voice and introspective songwriting, began his musical journey at Willunga Waldorf School, first on viola, then guitar and drums. By Year 12, he was performing around Aldinga and Willunga when he met producer David Turley, founder of Soma Daze studio.
The two clicked instantly. David, a passionate mentor and producer with international connections and deep local roots, saw potential in Jim’s sound — described as “worldly” and reminiscent of Nick Cave.
With the $3,000 grant, Jim was able to access professional studio time and collaborate with David to produce his debut EP Autonomy. The result? A polished, evocative 5-track release featuring songs like Waiting In Line, Loose Screws, and The Void — each layered with emotion and sonic depth.
“Without the grant money for studio time and collaboration with David, it would be like running on empty,” says Jim.
“Finding the right producer, especially as a solo artist, is like finding another member of your crew. You’re working together for a better quality of sound.”
The impact of the grant has been far-reaching:
- Jim has been featured on triple j Unearthed as an emerging artist.
- He’s booked new gigs and grown his audience.
- Developed a unique sound through trial, error, and heartfelt composition.
David sees the grant as more than just financial support — it’s a vote of confidence in local talent.
“As a society, we love music but we’re not great at supporting artists,” he says. “Artists have always been part of our society. They’re not always going to make a profit, but the value they offer is so much greater.”
