Description

A combination of shop and residence, the building is set into the side of an embankment forming a basement and retains its original shop windows and hipped roof. Walling is of bluestone rubble (now painted over) with rendered surrounds to openings.  The front façade features an ornate gable over the shop, which is reported to have been altered to incorporate a lean-to on the western façade.  The roofs are clad with corrugated galvanised iron.  The building is currently being used as Post Office, delicatessen and hairdresser.

History

A store was opened in Clarendon as early as 1858, when Thomas and Ellen Fox established their general store in the township.  It is thought this was established in the building at the corner of Miller Street.  A residential section was added to the eastern side of the store between 1873 and 1885.
