About the award

SALA logo

To foster and support curatorial practice, the City of Onkaparinga will award an emerging or established contemporary curator, the prize of $1000, in addition to the supported opportunity to curate a [GRAFTd] exhibition during SALA 2020.

Participants who register as a curator in SALA 2019 will be eligible to self-nominate for the award. By applying for the award, the curator affirms their availability to curate the SALA exhibition at Sauerbier House in 2020 launching.

The winner will be contracted to curate a [GRAFTd] exhibition at Sauerbier House during SALA 2020. The curated exhibition will run for seven weeks from 1 August until 19 September 2020. The recipient will receive a curatorial fee of $2000 to be paid by schedule.

Judging

  • The shortlisted curators will be selected on the strength of the conceptual rationale as articulated in the written application. Shortlisted curators will be selected by Onkaparinga Arts staff.
  • From the shortlisted applicants, three finalists will be selected by the Sauerbier House Reference Group (SHRG).
  • The winner will be selected following onsite review of their nominated 2019 SALA exhibition.
  • Consideration will be given to the conceptual rigour and cohesiveness of installation of the nominated exhibition, in relation to the clarity of intention described in the initial written application.

The award will be presented at the SALA Finissage event by a City of Onkaparinga representative.

2020 SALA exhibition

On receipt of the City of Onkaparinga Contemporary Curator Award, the winner will be contracted to generate a [GRAFTd] exhibition.

The subject of the 2020 SALA exhibition is unrestricted with appreciation that no content will be included that could be considered as sexist, racist, sexually inappropriate or liable to bring the City of Onkaparinga into disrepute. It is anticipated the curator will utilise both internal galleries at Sauerbier House in the execution of SALA 2020 exhibition. A detailed timeline will be provided to the curator on signing contract.

The winning curator will be required to provide the Sauerbier House coordinator with a concise project proposal (100 words) including working title, names of confirmed contributing artists, signature image (and attribution) by the 15 October 2019 for inclusion in the 2020 Port Noarlunga Arts Precinct Program.

The [GRAFTd] exhibition program anticipates the winning curator will arrange an associated element of community engagement, either representing their curatorial practice or linked with participating artists whilst exhibition is installed at Sauerbier House.

About Sauerbier House

Established in 2015, Sauerbier House culture exchange is a renovated colonial homestead located in the coastal township of Port Noarlunga in South Australia. Its programs are dedicated to the creation of living cultural dialogues and local creative exchanges expressed through contemporary arts practice. Its main program accommodates quarterly artist in residence occupancies and the [GRAFTd] exhibition program.

Two internal galleries, the northern grounds, and wash house at Sauerbier House are available for 2020 SALA exhibition and associated events.

About [GRAFTd]

[GRAFTd] exhibitions run concurrent to the artist in residence program, offering a supported platform for emerging and established, local or visiting contemporary visual artists, curators and researchers to exhibit work newly imagined or previously unseen in South Australia. Exhibitions run for an average of six weeks and are heralded with a licenced exhibition launch. It is anticipated that the curator will facilitate at least one opportunity for the community to extend their understanding of the curatorship and in a broader context extend their understanding of contemporary art.
