Council has a strong and active commitment to heritage conservation. It has developed a set of initiatives to conserve and promote both publicly and privately owned heritage places. These include:
- a heritage advisory service which can be accessed by owners of heritage properties within the City of Onkaparinga;
- Heritage grants for conservation work to local heritage buildings;
- Events/workshops on traditional skills and techniques;
- History and Heritage Awards.
Council has also developed a guide for owners of heritage owners that provide information on basic steps required for maintenance and conservation of the heritage buildings.

Council provides free expert architectural advice for property owners of local heritage items within the City of Onkaparinga. The advice provided will generally relate to:
- maintenance and conservation works
- redevelopment and additions to heritage buidings
- information on local contractors and builders
- pre-lodgement advice for development applications.
Heritage Grants offer the owners of local heritage properties and contributory items a subsidy for work associated with the conservation of their building(s).

Each year council organises a heritage event/workshop to promote and recognise a variety of initiatives within, or associated with, the City of Onkaparinga that have contributed to the promotion, conservation and understanding of our local history and heritage.
The City of Onkaparinga organises History and Heritage Awards every two years. The Awards recognise outstanding contributions to heritage conservation, education, promotion, interpretation and awareness-raising within the council area.
