Media response - Port Noarlunga Sports Complex

Response to The Advertiser.

  • I'm writing a story about the exciting funding announcement for Port Noarlunga Oval. Could you please provide some comment from council about how exciting it is, what it means for the clubs and community etc. Also could you please tell me when council committed their part of the funding? And how long this project/upgrade has been in the works? I know it's been a long process.

Council approved a revised proposal for the development of new facilities at Port Noarlunga Sports Ground at its meeting in May 2020.

On 8 December 2020 Council approved the submission of an application for $1.65M funding for this project through the Local Government Infrastructure Partnership Program to be matched with Council funding.

The Port Noarlunga Sports and Community Club has actively advocated for the redevelopment of the complex, including a deputation to council in July 2018, when council resolved to continue to work with the club to finalise the facility plan for the site and develop their facility replacement proposal incorporating a business case. Council also then resolved to support the club in its application for applicable grant applications, and for the project to be considered in Council’s 2019 – 2020 budget deliberations.

Comments attributed to Mayor Erin Thompson

This is a big win for the community.

The ground is used by local football, cricket, netball, tennis and gridiron clubs; community groups; and for events such as the Port Noarlunga Blues Festival.

We’re also excited women will finally receive their own dedicated changerooms to support their participation in sport and particularly the growing Australian rules football competition.

The new facility will provide new community spaces including the social space and kitchen, both for club members and creating further opportunities for revenue generation through community use and events.

A big thankyou to the state government for matching council’s $1.65 million funding, and to everyone who got behind this project, particularly the passionate club members.
