Media response - Port Noarlunga security measures

Published on 15 July 2020

Response to The Advertiser.

  • Looking for a response from council regarding Katrine Hildyard's calls for council and the state government to install CCTV and additional lighting in Port Noarlunga following the recent arson attack and incidents of crime.
  • Is this something council is considering?

The City of Onkaparinga is committed to working with SA Police to protect our community and assets. We therefore support the use of crime prevention methods, including CCTV and lighting in public areas, where appropriate, and where it is believed they will discourage criminal and anti-social behaviour and increase public confidence in the safety and security of our public spaces.

Council have recently increased CCTV coverage in the foreshore area of Port Noarlunga and we’re also looking at upgrading the street lighting in the next six months using LED technology, which will improve the lighting levels through the area. We will explore opportunities to further expand CCTV into other areas of concern, through the application for relevant grants when available.

State and Federal Government Community Safety and Crime Prevention grants, for example, provide great mechanisms for councils to improve the safety and security of public places and we welcome the opportunity to apply for grants for CCTV and lighting in areas where SA Police and the community have concerns.
