They’re a Rowdy Mob - Peter Macmullin

Next date: Monday, 04 December 2023 | 01:00 PM to Monday, 11 December 2023 | 04:00 PM

Artwork by Peter McMullin

As a resident of Aldinga Beach from 2001 to 2016, Peter witnessed flocks of Corellas descending on the Aldinga township and district many times. While the huge flocks stripped bare big eucalypts in rapid time, creating an almighty din in the process, Peter was mesmerised by their beauty.

The ethereal sight of their white bodies having similarities to those of doves, incongruous to their true nature, there was also an uncanny resemblance in the behaviour which mimicked the rowdy Aussie culture. He saw them as larrikins of the air. Inspired by a recent visit to The Picasso Century at the NGV in Melbourne and the idea of paring back the form, anatomically awkward and exaggerated seems to align with the Corella’s chaotic nature.

While there is a concern of the increasing size of the flocks and the damage they create, they are also an Australian native in every way.
