Curator Statement
Transitional states and the fluidity of being - to be human is to constantly be in flux. The human experience in all its originality, ebbs and flows according to the randomness of life. Challenges rise and fall, like the tide, the sun and the moon. In a modern life increasingly removed from natural patterns, we collectively ask is it still possible to respond to the organic rhythms that surround us and if so, how and when do we do so?
In Flux seeks to illustrate the insatiable human desire to create structure and form in direct contrast to organic natural forces, while correspondingly examining the compulsion to find respite in the natural world. This constant quest to maintain a middle-ground between natural existence and modernisation creates a tension in our lives. When this tension is pulled too tight, the fine balance of being ‘in flux’ is ultimately disrupted.
Curator Christina Lauren aims to demonstrate the role of creativity as a platform from which to seek and find refuge, while validating the function of expression to question and reflect on our lived experience. The selected works physically speak to the concept of being ‘in flux’, both conceptually and physically.
In Flux features works by Emerald, Pony, ExpressWay, Hannah Coleman, Annie Harvey, Mali Isabel, Kit Jury, Fuko Suzuki and Tiah Trimboli. The artists have individually dissected their positions in the world, the work attesting to their lived feelings of constant flux. Themes of belonging, searching, yearning, peace, trust, distrust, feeling fully alive, and feeling not so much, are strongly represented throughout the exhibition. Their collective reflections have been woven together in a bid to encourage others to analyse and reflect on their own state of flux.
In Flux takes place on Kaurna Land, by the Ngangkiparinga (Women’s River). We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Kaurna elders, past present and emerging. Sovereignty has never been ceded. Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.
