Worta Burro
Artists: Shialee Brodie and Shai Brodie, November 2023
Material: Exterior paint on zinc aluminium sheeting, 2000mm x 2400mm
The mural was created by Shialee Brodie and her daughter Shai. Shialee is a local Kaurna woman who was chosen by the Southern Elders Group to complete the mural in 2023.
The mural is called ‘Worta Burro’ meaning ‘all together’ and depicts the work that Neporendi Aboriginal Forum Incorporated do in the community. Shialee and Shai took approximately 100 hours to complete the piece.
The meaning behind the design:
- Hands on the background are from the local community, which were placed at the 2023 NAIDOC event at Rotary Park, Christies Beach.
- The centre is the board members of Neporendi.
- The five groups of coloured dots shown in the ripples reflect the 30 years of Neporendi (turned 30 in 2023).
- The white spirals between them are the knowledge and spirit that is left behind with every year that passes.
- The three circled groups are the Elders, men’s, and women’s groups.
- The left-hand corner shows the present caretakers of Neporendi Aboriginal Community Centre
This work was originally an outdoor mural at the Neporendi Aboriginal Community Centre when it was based at Old Reynella.
Since the move to the Wardli Centre in Christie Downs, the mural is now at the entry to the Neporendi space in the complex.
