Surf Art exhibition 2019

The Surf Art Exhibition marks the beginning of summer and has become one of the pivotal features of the annual program at the Arts Centre Port Noarlunga. Carving a place in the hearts and souls of the southern arts calendar, the Exhibition celebrates not only surfing culture, but our region’s history, stunning coastal environment and lifestyle.

In 2019, the annual Surf Art Exhibition is entitled Paddle Out.

The City of Onkaparinga’s annual Surf Art Exhibition is open to all Australian artists celebrating the ocean, the coastal environment, the culture and all things Surf.

This year we also invite artists to consider the exhibition theme, ‘Paddle Out’ and what this means.

Shimmer Festival of Photography 2020

Applications for Shimmer Festival of Photography are now open, application details can be found further down this page.

Shimmer Festival of Photography is a month long arts festival running from 11 September to 11 October 2020 and will celebrate the creative power of photography as one of the most prolific and celebrated story telling mechanisms available.  

Representing photographers of all competencies, Shimmer Festival of Photography will platform current photographic trends alongside traditional technologies to pay homage to the ‘perfect shot’ and the alchemic processes that develop, print and capture life in all its complexity.

Spread across the City’s six wards, Shimmer aims to bring to our region a rich variety of photographic experiences. Delivered through a multiplicity of events, the extended program will include a series of significant core exhibitions, satellite activations, outdoor installations, an industry forum, artist led workshops and professional opportunities for the wider community to engage in all things camera.

Involvement opportunities

The City of Onkaparinga is proud to provide artists the opportunity to display their works or host an event throughout our City as part of Shimmer.  We are seeking applications for photographers and industry professionals to: 

  • Exhibit single works in satellite exhibitions installed in shop windows across City of Onkaparinga.
  • Host an associated event including open studios or other skill development workshops. 

All successful Shimmer photographers will have the opportunity for one of their submissions to be selected as a signature Shimmer outdoor installation. If selected, your piece will be printed in large format and installed in a prominent outdoor, high traffic, high visibility location within the City of Onkaparinga.

Selection criteria

All applications submitted for consideration will undertake the same selection process and be assessed against the following criteria:

  • Originality | demonstrates innovation, originality, experimentation, creativity.
  • Professionalism | production and presentation of quality images.
  • Clarity | intention of project is apparent.
  • Readability | demonstrates articulate aesthetic and conceptual coherence between works.
  • Diversity | ensuring a broad and wide ranging appeal to all audiences.

 The selection process is facilitated by the Shimmer Festival of Photography Reference Panel consisting of: 

Selection by the reference panel is final and no further correspondence will occur.

Core exhibition - Applications now closed

 Photographers selected for core Shimmer exhibitions will be:

  • Curated into core or satellite exhibition venue by Shimmer reference panel.
  • Included in the printed program, either with placement on the drivable map or event listing.*
  • Included on the event website.
  • Offered the opportunity to present at Open Exposure: Photo Forum.
  • Promoted across our social media platforms.
  • Promoted in a written profile piece to be shared via social media.
  • Provided with Shimmer collateral to promote yourself as part of the event.

Requirements

To be considered as a core exhibition artist, you must adhere to the following requirements:

  • Abridged CV (1 page) for each contributing artist (if more than one artist).
  • Clearly labelled supporting images.

Images uploaded on application must be:

  • Original works by the listed applicants.
  • Must be indicative of work to be exhibited in the Shimmer 2020 program.
  • Must be accompanied by an artist statement and a list of image credits and specifications.
  • Must be supplied in JPEG format.
  • Cannot be larger than 5MB per image.

Timelines (Applications now closed) 

  • Applications open: 22 August 2019
  • Applications close: 31 October 2019
  • Successful applicants notified by: 30 November 2019

Notes

  • Priority will be given to work not previously exhibited in South Australia.
  • The reference panel will be responsible for the selection of core exhibitors based on the images and information supplied in the application.

* This will depend on the chosen format of the printed program and is not guaranteed.

Satellite exhibition

Photographers work selected for satellite exhibitions will be:

  • Curated into satellite exhibition venue by Shimmer reference panel.
  • Printed onto double sided corflute for window installations by City of Onkaparinga (up to three works).
  • Included in the printed program, either with placement on the drivable map or event listing.*
  • Included on the event website.
  • Included in social media posts promoting the key locations to visit the Satellite events.

Requirements

To be considered as a satellite exhibition artist, you must adhere to the following requirements:

  • The actual original photograph/s for consideration.
  • An artist statement for each image (25 words) submitted.
  • List of image credits including title, date, medium and process for each image.
  • Images supplied in JPEG format.
  • Images no larger than 5MB per image.

Timelines

  • Applications open: 22 August 2019
  • Applications close: 15 February 2020
  • Successful applicants notified by: 20 March 2020

Notes

  • Priority will be given to work that has not been exhibited in South Australia.
  • The reference panel will be responsible for image selection based on the actual images uploaded in this application. 
  • The number of exhibited images will be dependent on the venues available space.

* This will depend on the chosen format of the printed program and is not guaranteed.

Associated event

Associated event holders selected for inclusion in the program will receive the following benefits:

  • Event included in the printed program, either with placement on the drivable map or event listing.*
  • Full event details listed on the event website.
  • Opportunity to present at Open Exposure: Photo Forum.
  • Event information shared across our social media platforms.
  • Promotional signage and Shimmer collateral to promoting your association with Shimmer Festival of Photography.

Requirements

To be considered as an associated event holder you must you must adhere to the following requirements:

  • The event must be held within the City of Onkaparinga.
  • Read and understand the event terms and conditions(PDF, 315KB).
  • Complete an online application form accompanied by:
  • Artist/s/facilitators social media links or website.
  • Event details including preferred dates, times, anticipated costs and inclusions (if applicable).
  • The ability to obtain Public Liability Insurance to the value of $20 million.
  • If an open studio or independent exhibition, the following must also be included:
    • Abridged CV (1 page) for each contributing artist (if more than 1).
    • Clearly labelled supporting images.

Images uploaded on application must be:

  • Original works by the listed applicants.
  • Must be indicative of work to be exhibited in the Shimmer 2020 program.
  • Must be accompanied by an artist statement and a list of image credits and specifications.
  • Must be supplied in JPEG format.
  • Cannot be larger than 5MB per image.

Timelines

  • Applications open: 22 August 2019

  • Successful applicants notified by: 20 March 2020

Notes

  • An associated event can include but is not limited to an independent exhibition, skill sharing workshop, an artist talk, open studio, demonstration, community event or the willingness to present at the Open Exposure photoforum.
  • Artist, groups or industry professionals interested in holding an associated event may be affiliated with an exhibition or present as a stand-alone offering.
  • Preparation and management of online booking and ticketing is the responsibility of the event organiser.

Sauerbier House Artist in Residence program

Expressions of interest are now closed for our July 2020 - June 2021 Artist in Residence program.

Practicing, emerging or established, local or visiting contemporary artists, working in any discipline were invited to apply to participate in Sauerbier House artist in residence program (non-residential) between July 2020 and June 2021. As a site-responsive residency, artists were asked to respond to the location or in a broader context, to the City of Onkaparinga.

  • Material support of $2000 per residence (paid by schedule) was offered.
  • Artist will facilitate opportunities for the community to participate with their practice by way of workshops, demonstrations, artist talks, etc.
  • Applicants were required to be over 18 year of age.

[GRAFTd] Exhibition program

Proposals are now closed for our May 2020 - June 2021 [GRAFTd] Exhibition program.

Sole or collaborative contemporary visual artists or curators, local or visiting artists were invited to apply to exhibit new or previously unseen work through the [GRAFTd] Exhibition program at Sauerbier House between May 2020 and June 2021.
