Crime Rates

The crime statistics presented here are the latest available for the City of Onkaparinga.  There were 21,115 recorded offences in 2007, down by 3.3% from 21,825 in 2006, after remaining relatively stable for two years.  This made up 10.9% of all offences in Metropolitan South Australia during 2007.

In 2007, 44.0% of the recorded crime in Onkaparinga was detected due to proactive policing.  This is higher than the corresponding percentage for Metropolitan South Australia (35.8%).

The 2007 offence rate for the City of Onkaparinga was 135.4 per 1,000 population.  This was 19.2% lower than Metro South Australia figure of 167.6 per 1,000 population.  The City of Onkaparinga has consistently recorded lower crime rates than the Metropolitan area of South Australia for the seven years from 2001 to 2007 (inclusive).

Types of Offences

Offences against property decreased significantly, 11.3% in 2007 when compared to 2006.  Offences against property represented 47.0% of all recorded incidents, followed by driving (24.5%) and offences against good order (18.0%).

Robbery and extortion increased by 36 reported incidents and sexual offences were also on the rise.

The City of Onkaparinga's crime rates are below those of Metropolitan South Australia as a whole in all but one area: offences against good order (0.9 per 1,000 higher).

Offences per Onkaparinga Statistical Local Area (SLA)

The highest offence rate in 2007 was in the North Coast SLA, at 321.6 per 1,000 persons compared to a rate of 135.4 for Onkaparinga as a whole. The other six SLAs had lower crime rates than Metropolitan South Australia for 2007, although Hackham (154.3 per 1,000), Morphett (156.9 per 1,000) and South Coast (137.3 per 1,000) had higher rates than Onkaparinga as a whole.
