Community Housing, Onkaparinga, 2006

Community housing is a partnership between government and community-managed housing organizations to provide affordable and appropriate housing for low income earners and people with special needs (e.g. homeless, disabled, or victims of domestic violence). The Department for Families and Communities (DFC) is responsible for the oversight and management of community housing through the SA Community Housing Authority. The DFC works in cooperation with 120 organisations, which are registered under Community Housing legislation (a).

In July 2006 there were 28 Onkaparinga suburbs with a total of 647 community housing residences. The greatest numbers were in Morphett Vale (114), Christie Downs (68), Hackham West (66) and Huntfield Heights (63). (b)
