Immunisation Coverage
The City of Onkaparinga offers free immunisation for babies and adolescents as recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). The NHMRC Immunisation Schedule is designed to protect children against the following infectious diseases:
- Diptheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough)
- Measles, mumps and rubella
- Poliomyelitis
- Adult diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis for older children
- Hepatitis B
- Haemophilus Influenzae Type B
- Meningococcal C
- Pneumococcal
- Chicken pox
- Hepatitis A (Indigenous population)
Other vaccines, such as Adult Diptheria, Influenza and Tetanus are available for a nominal fee. This program protects the community from the serious complications of common diseases that can be prevented.

In the five calendar years from 2004 to 2008, the City of Onkaparinga Immunisation service delivered 108,805 immunisations to 71,855 clients: 27,039 babies, 39,763 school and kindergarten children and 5,053 adults in their work places.
Immunisation Coverage State Comparison
The table and chart below show how South Australia compared to the rest of Australia in terms of immunisation coverage in the calendar year of 2008. The highest percentages of immunised children were in the ACT (92.9%), Victoria (92.7%) and Tasmania (91.3%). Of the eight states and territories, South Australia ranked 7th in terms of immunisation coverage (89.8%).
