Wine region tonnages 2000 - 2004, South Australia

McLaren Vale produced a record tonnage in 2004 making it the second largest producing region in the State(a).

The region crushed 71,515 tonnes of winegrapes – an increase of over 35,800 tonnes or 65% on 2003. McLaren Vale Grape Wine and Tourism attribute the increased yield to good fruitfulness and young vines coming into production(b). Winemakers are expecting good quality and flavour in the 2004 vintage.

The McLaren Vale Region in 2004 comprised 8% of the total vintage crush in South Australia, ranking it second after the Riverland as the largest in the State.

The value of the McLaren Vale winegrape crush for vintage 2004 was estimated to be nearly $98 million, representing 12% of the South Australian total estimated weighbridge value of $818 million. This represented an increase of $28 million above the regions total of $70 million in 2003.
