Demographic Profile, City of Onkaparinga and Adelaide Metropolitan Area

The Estimated Resident Population profile for 2003 indicate that the City of Onkaparinga continues to have a higher proportion of children and young adults aged 0-19 years (29%) than the Adelaide Metropolitan Area (25%). The adult parents of this age group are also more prevalent proportionally than those in the Adelaide Metropolitan Area.

The figures however reveal a lower representation of 20-34 year olds in relation to Metropolitan Adelaide. This may reflect the preference of this age group to living in areas located closer to the Adelaide Central Business District. The reasons for the movement of this age group from the outer suburbs could include higher employment and study opportunities and the availability of accommodation more closely aligned to their lifestyle in the inner city regions.

Whilst the 60 years and over age groupings in the City of Onkaparinga are lower as a proportion than the Adelaide Metropolitan area, this group makes up proportionally 15% of the City of Onkaparinga's population and 11% of the total older population of Metropolitan Adelaide.
