The City of Onkaparinga has been attempting to deal with the impact of abundant little corellas in our area for over ten years, particularly in the township of Old Noarlunga. During this time we have sought the assistance of the state government in managing this problem, as a regional natural resource management issue.
Earlier this year the Department for Environment & Heritage (DEH) commissioned Ian Temby M App Sc, Churchill Fellow 1999 to provide a report on possible options for managing the impacts of the Little Corella on the Fleurieu Peninsula. This project was jointly funded by the City of Onkaparinga, DEH, Adelaide Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resource Management Board (NRM), South Australian Murray Darling Basin Natural Resources Management Board and Alexandrina Shire.
There are a number of options arising from the report that warrant further exploration, including the role that different organisations and the community have in leading and implementing these options and strategies.
We are currently working with the DEH and NRM Board to clarify the roles that each organisation will play in the development of management plans and the implementation of effective on-ground strategies. It is important that there is a commitment by relevant state agencies for on-ground action and leadership in addition to research and advice, given our respective roles and responsibilities on this issue.
