Lost and found dogs

Wandering at large

It is an offence for your dog to wander at large, which in practice, means any dog in a place without permission, including on the road and footpath without physical restraint. It is important that you have a secure yard to prevent your dog from escaping and that it’s registration disc is attached to its collar so that we can identify your dog and reunite it with you as soon as possible.

Lost dogs

Should your dog escape your yard or become lost, please contact our offices to make a report. Your details will be entered into the Lost Dog Register, which will assist us in identifying you as the owner, should the dog be found wandering at large.

Please contact (08) 8384 0666 to report your lost dog.

Please also refer to our impounded dogs page, to find out whether your dog may have been found and is waiting for you at the RSPCA.

Found dogs

If you have found a dog within our area, please contact our offices as soon as possible to report its location, description of the dog and any registration disc details.
All reports of found dogs will be cross-referenced with the Lost Dog Register to try to identify an owner.

Where an owner cannot be identified or contacted, or where there is no identification, a Community Ranger will attend to collect the dog. All dogs received by our Community Rangers will be searched for microchips, registration discs or other identification.

If an owner cannot be identified or contacted, the dog will be taken to the RSPCA shelter at Lonsdale, where RSPCA staff will attempt to identify the owner (if not yet identified) to reunite with their dog.

Please be aware: our Community Rangers cannot attend properties without the occupant in attendance to collect found dogs, a member of the public must hand the dog over to our staff.

Please contact our offices on (08) 8384 0666 between 8.30am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, to report a found dog, or (08) 8384 0622 outside of these hours.

After hours

Between the hours of 8pm and 7am weekdays, and 7pm and 8am weekends, there is no ranger service. Please phone council’s emergency afterhours on 08 8384 0622 to report a lost or found dog and we will attempt to reunite the dog with its owner.

If reunion is not possible and Community Ranger attendance is required, a Ranger will attend from 7am the following week day, or 8am on weekends.
